Our greatest source of Internet traffic flows from search engines. Just by adding a single link we can attract hundreds (even thousands) of new visitors to our website week after week.
Submitting to search engines is simple. There are two ways to add a link.
Linking manually is considered best. You travel to the site in person and place the link yourself. It takes more time but you see the results and can correct any errors or mistakes.
Automatic submissions are made using specialized software or cgi scripts. It saves time but may not be as effective. Submission forms are not standardized and links may fail or be omitted.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH?
Kim Skinner of K&D; Publishing AdvertisingTips states in her Internet marketing techniques book:”There are only 8 search engines that matter… you can toss the rest away”.

List of Top 12 Best Search Engines in The World
With search engines there is one rule, “bigger is better”. That’s because the biggest best known directories draw the highest traffic (and have the largest number of surfers “searching”).
ONE POWERFUL CLICK
A quick way to add links with the other top search sites is by using a free service such as the All4One Submission Machine found at: all4one.com
One click submits to 8 search engines: AltaVista, AOL, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek, Northernlights, and WebCrawler.
The results are displayed on your screen so you see if the link was properly indexed. With a tool like this it only takes a few seconds to submit a link to the major sites.
The best way I have found to submit to 35+ of the Internet’s spider search engines is at JimTools http://jimtools.com/ Even those with their own software will want to give these free submissions sites a try.
If you have not submitted a link to any of the major search engines you should do so without delay. It is well worth waiting for the traffic search engines bring.
SO MANY PLACES.., SO LITTLE TIME
What about the 12,000+ “other” search engines, directories, and free link pages? Some experts advise us not to bother. They claim nobody visits these sites. I disagree and know the more places a link is included the more hits you receive. I always submit my links to as many sites as possible but spend the majority of my time on the main ones.
There are many services that will submit a website for you. These are affordable if you have only a few sites to link. Those with several URLs should consider investing in their own submission software.
Be wary of companies that guarantee a top ranking. Most only mirror other high positioned sites. You will likely be disappointed with the results.
Submitting to search engines is not a difficult task. The key is to concentrate on the biggest search engines that deliver the most traffic to your site. Make sure your sites get listed and use META Tags and simple search engine positioning techniques to achieve better placements.
