So you want to become an author. And you’re pretty sure you want to publish your book in electronic form. First you’ll need a topic. While some people know what they’ll write about immediately others need some time. If you fall in the latter category, following these tips will put you a step closer to finding the best topic for you:

Expertise: Do you already have enough knowledge on a topic to share it with others without needing much research? This would be your best bet for an ebook topic-particularly you’re first one. Writing about a topic you know well will give you the comfort level you need while working on your writing skills and the technical side of putting together an ebook. Your profession could provide you with a number of topics. Your life experiences can provide a wealth of topics too. Adding your personal perspective throughout the book will engage the reader and make them feel a connection to you- the author.

Hobbies: Take a look at hobbies when choosing a topic for your book. Writing about something that you do for fun could generate some money for you if you sell the ebook. Since you have a personal interest in the topic you’ll be motivated to stay with your writing project. Consider a basic how-to ebook on a favorite sport, craft or card game. If you have more experience with a hobby consider offering a more in depth perspective. Help novices become pros.

Creativity: For future authors wanting to tell fictional stories tap into creativity for a topic. First start by looking at the types of books you read. If you’re into mystery, try penning a mystery story. Read a lot of sci-fi stories? That could be your specialty. By writing in a genre you’re familiar with you’ll know what other readers will expect of your ebook. You can gain inspiration from favorite authors if you get a case of writer’s block.

Curiosity: If you can’t find a suitable topic in the above categories consider writing on a topic that you would like to learn more about yourself. As you research to find your answers you can turn it into a manuscript that will be useful to others. You can draw from classes you’ve taken or other books you’ve read.
