WHERE TO FIND CONTENT
by Renee Kennedy
First things first - finding content is not difficult, as long
as you know your topic. Some of the above articles address
topics that your ezine can cover. Once you know the
topic, finding articles is relatively simple.
Here are a few ways to find content:
1. If you happen to be perusing a site and you find an article
that you think your readers would like, just send the webmaster
a quick note and ask if you may "borrow" the article for your ezine.
Say that the copyright will remain in the author's possession and
that you will also give the author a "resource box". A resource box
is a "plug" for the author or for the author's website or newsletter.
Seldom has an author refused to allow me to publish
a previously written article in our newsletter or even on our website.
(It has happened twice, so it is good to ask permission first.)
2. Usually, authors will go out of their way for you - they may
even write an article on a specific topic for you - it's amazing.
If you find an author that you like and they seem to be
knowledgeable on a topic that you'd like to address in your
newsletter - then ask them if they will write an article for you.
Why do authors do this? Because they get a free plug. And they
can use the article in the future for their own newsletter or for their
website or for other newsletters.
3. Subscribe to email lists that send free content or deal
with content.
http://www.onelist.com/community/Free-Content - my favorite.
http://www.e-zinez.com/ - there are several free content
lists here - you may sign up for the ones that interest you.
http://list-content.com/about/ - Writers and Publishers
online - a monthly publication about writing content.
4. Visit websites that offer free content, you can also submit articles
to most of these sources. (In a future article, we will discuss how
distributing articles that you've written can increase your subscribers.)
http://www.ezinearticles.com - The largest collection of free articles
I've ever seen.
http://www.writebusiness.com - Scroll down and click on "articles for
reprint". Articles on marketing, writing, business, Christianity and more.
http://certificate.net/wwio/ - free articles on a variety of topics.
http://www.aracopy.com/index2.html - a large selection of articles
on a variety of topics - most are *not* internet or marketing related!
http://www.zinos.com/ - variety of topics.
http://www.infobot.net/ - They send you the articles via autoresponder.
http://www.ideamarketers.com/ - Submit articles and also find content.
http://www.clickit.com/library/abodoc.htm - Submit articles.
http://www.inetfreedom.com/ - Small selection of articles that required
research like "Is there life on Mars?"
WARNING #1 - the 4 ways to find content above are great -
but realize that these articles are usually going to be used
again and again. If you can get a hold of an article before
anyone else - that is fantastic! But if you're the 5th or 6th
newsletter to grab up an article - it's not so fantastic.
People want original content. It is my feeling that you
must write some of it yourself. Original content is one key to
keeping subscribers.
WARNING #2: If you find some free content on one of these
free content sites - you might do yourself a favor by asking the
author's permission to use the article. Even though the site
may offer it to you - it's only polite to ask before using it - unless
it specifically says, "this article is free for distribution, you don't
need to ask permission," or something similar.

SAVE ROOM FOR THE BIG ROCKS
One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a
group of business students, and to drive home a point, used an
illustration those students will never forget.
As he stood in front of high-powered overachievers, he said,
"Okay, time for a quiz." Then he pulled out a one gallon, wide
mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he
produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed
them in the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no
more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is the jar full?'
Everyone in the class replied "Yes". Then he said. "Really?"
He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel.
Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces
of gravel to work themselves into the space between the
big rocks.
Then he asked the group once more "Is the jar full?"
By this time the group was catching on to him.
"Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied.
He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand.
He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces
left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the
question, "Is the jar full?"
"No!" the class shouted. Once again, he said, "Good." Then
he grabbed a pitcher of water and began pouring it in until the
jar was full to the brim.
Then he looked at the class and asked:
"What is the point of this illustration?"
One eager student raised his hand and said,
"The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you really try hard,
you can always fit some more things in."
"No", the speaker replied, "That is not the point.
The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don't put
the big rocks in first, you'll never get them all in at all. What
are the Big Rocks in your life? Your children, your loved
ones, your education, your dreams, a worthy cause, doing things
you love, your health, your significant other? Remember to put
those Big Rocks in first, or you'll never get to them at all.
If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, sand), then you'll
fill your life with little things to worry about that don't really
matter, and you'll never have the time to spend on the big,
important things (the big rocks)."
So, tonight or in the morning,
when you are reflecting on this story,
ask yourself this question:
What are the Big Rocks in my life?
Then put those in your jar first.
